been meaning to write this for a while. important question: what is an ally.

answer: an ally is a close,trusted friend of someone in a marginalized group.

you can’t be an ally to a movement. you have to be an ally to an individual person. donating to a gay rights group and reading a bunch of literature doesn’t make you an lbgt ally. calling out random racists doesn’t make you a POC ally. if you have a black friend, well, ask your black friend. usually an ally is someone close enough to someone in the marginalized group to be personally affected, if indirectly, by that marginalization. Allies are the siblings of autistic kids who stand up for them on the playground and the SOs of trans people who never forget pronouns or let anyone else forget while they’re around and so on and so forth, but always to an individual. An ally to a movement is generally just someone who wants to edge in where they don’t really belong.

One of the first things I learned when looking up the Elements when a wee-old fluffy bunny… Was that each Element had a creature associated with it, called an “Elemental”… Or apparently some kind of really powerful Elemental nature spirit, or some shit.

Yes, all Elements have beings that can be attributed to them… But really, it’s not JUST Gnomes for Earth, Undines for Water, Salamanders for Fire (Where the hell did Salamander come from anyways? It’s not even a magical creature… I would have expect “Dragon” or some shit), and Sylphs for Air.

There are THOUSANDS of magical creatures that can be attributed one, or more, of the Elements. I wouldn’t necessarily call them “Elementals”, though… Or say they’re powerful (or more-so than other spirits/beings that could be attributed to that element), or whatever it is.

I never really understood it, personally. Really, it’s far from the case, IMO.

I always wondered why it was salamanders for fire. It seems to be a very ingrained cultural thing, found in fantasy novels as much as neoWiccan books (and others?).

Salamanders have a habit of living in the kinds of logs people use for firewood, and because their skin is damp it protects them from the fire enough that they can generally escape unharmed, so people got the impression they could live in fires or something :o

if we didn’t have society we would all have tons of rights: the right to die whenever we damn well pleased, the right to sleep on any piece of ground we wished, the right to fight back if someone tries to detain you, etc. lots of rights. maybe doing these things would be dangerous, but we would have the right. maybe nobody cares whether you have the right, but technically, you do.

the only thing that ever takes away rights is society and government. without such restrictions we are literally free, and it’s debatable whether that’s a good thing (i personally don’t think it is) but you can’t argue that you wouldn’t have rights because that is the definition of having them.

if you disagree with destroying society, then what you need to say is “some rights aren’t good/are important to restrict”, not “zomg you would lose your rights” because if there’s no law to restrict your rights then you have all of them. that is how you words.

but if all you do is destroy society as it currently exists, a new society will just come together and it’ll probably be based on the strong bossing the weak around. not many people have rights under that kind of society.

to destroy society and prevent it from reforming you’d have to prevent people from interacting with one another, because that’s all society is. and most people wouldn’t survive that. :/

okay i have to point out that this isn’t what evolution means, you can’t ‘over-evolve’ it’s just the process of adapting to a given situation. individual blind mutations add up to a gradual drift toward beneficial ones. problems only happen if the circumstances that lead to that evolution change suddenly

obviously, yeah, but the use in context seemed to be a dismissive use of the term, especially with the ‘check your privilege’ thing right after it? i mean, if someone’s experiencing a ptsd reaction to hotdogs doesn’t that also mean they need trigger warnings for hotdogs as well as whatever medical support?

i guess they mostly meant they didn’t believe anyone really had that reaction but using ‘seek psychiatric help’ like that in a post that’s supposed to be about taking ptsd seriously seemed… out of place? because ‘seek psychiatric help’ is almost always used negatively to dismiss the need to accommodate people, or just as a more euphemistic way of saying ‘you’re just crazy’.

I’m not gonna say anything specific, so as not to spoil anything serious, but there’s one scene in there where Felix makes a comment, a relatively innocuous one, to another character, and that character has a traumatic flash back and freaks the fuck out.

That, my friends, my followers, is a trigger.

A trigger is not getting upset, a trigger is not getting offended. It’s not getting jealous because of something, and it sure as hell isn’t an excuse to try and exert your views over everybody else. It’s a reaction to a traumatic experience. It’s an unfortunate, traumatic experience/state, and it’s being watered down by it’s overuse on tumblr by people who hardly have a grasp on what it means.

My mom’s boyfriend is triggered by loud, sudden noises. He has PTSD, due to several years of service and several terms overseas in Iraq as a medic in the army. He killed a man in self defense, and is still suffering because of it today.

If you honestly get that reaction from seeing a picture of hot dogs, you should invest in some serious psychiatric help immediately.

So you know what? be thankful that you don’t have to suffer through that, and promptly

good, ‘cept re: the hot dog example, if someone’s gone through/is going through an eating disorder mebbe they do have a nasty reaction to pictures of food in some contexts. maybe they don’t actually freak the fuck out but it ruins their day or just makes them feel really uncomfortable. that could still be a trigger because ‘trigger’ means something that causes a reaction because of association with past traumatic experience — the reaction is gonna vary enormously between people and won’t always be a panic attack. and pretty much anything can be a trigger, including things that may at first glance seem like an unfunny joke.

ultimately, a trigger warning is basically a form of content tag. if people want to read your blog but don’t want to be exposed to certain things for whatever reason, it’s good to be accommodating of that.
